GPS: Short for global positioning system, which uses satellites to tell where planes, boats, hikers, collared bears or other moving objects are. Helps planes land through clouds.  

Glacier Bay National Monument and Preserve: Federally managed wilderness in what until recently was a completely glaciated area. Traditional home of what are now Hoonah-based Tlingits. Glory Hole: Juneau nonprofit homeless shelter and soup kitchen. Run by council of church representatives called Juneau Cooperative Christian Ministries. Probably the largest homeless shelter in Southeast.  Contact: 586-1346; www.ptialaska.net/~homeless/  

Goldbelt Inc.: Juneau's ANCSA urban Native corporation, with about 3,200 shareholders. Involved in tourism and real estate, has ended timber operations. Greens Creek Mine: The Admiralty Island multi-metal mine within Juneau's boundaries is a joint venture of Kennecott Minerals (71 percent), based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Hecla Mining Co. (29 percent), based in Coeur d'Alene,Idaho. Hagevig Fire Training Center : William Hagevig Regional Fire Training Center, state training facility in Juneau. Hagevig was a longtime Alaskan involved in fire training statewide. Cruise ship and ferry crews train there.  Contact: 465-3117  

Haines: Consolidated borough of 2,400, until recently a separate city and borough. At the southern end of Haines Highway, which connects to the Alaska Highway at Haines Junction, and 80 air miles northwest of Juneau.  Contact: 766-2231; www.hainesborough.us/  Mayor: Michael Case   City Manager: Keith Bettridge  Economy: Transportation, tourism, fishing.

Hoonah: First-class city of about 850 near Icy Strait . Across the strait from Glacier Bay. Inland Boatmen's Union: The Inland Boatmen's Union of the Pacific, known as the IBU, represents about 500 ferry staff, including stewards, cooks, bartenders, and pursers, plus some longshore workers.  It is affiliated with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU).

Inter-island Ferry Authority: The IFA is a Port Authority created by its member communities: Craig, Klawock, Thorne Bay, Coffman Cove, Wrangell and Petersburg. Ketchikan is not a member community.  IFA ferries are 200 feet long with a single steel hull.  The IFA ferry Prince of Wales started service in 2002, making daily trips of three hours each way between Ketchikan and Hollis.  A second ferry, the Stikine , is planned for the Coffman Cove-Wrangell-Petersburg route sometime in 2006.  Contact: www.interislandferry.com/; ifa@interislandferry.com
