REAA: Regional Education Attendance Area: Basically, a school district for communities too small to have their own school district. Board members are elected. Southeast REAAs include:  Chatham , Southeast Islands .

Saxman: Second-class city of 425 2 miles south of Ketchikan within the Ketchikan Gateway Borough. Sealaska Heritage Institute: Juneau-based cultural organization for Tlingits, Haidas and Tsimshians of Southeast Alaska. Skagway : First-class city of 850 at the northern end of Lynn Canal . Once a lawless gold rush town. Still home of the White Pass and Yukon Route railway. 90 miles northeast of Juneau at the northernmost end of Lynn Canal , at the head of Taiya Inlet and 110 road miles south of Whitehorse  Contact: 983-2297; www.skagway.org  Mayor: Tim Bourcy.  City manager: Bob Ward.  Economy: Tourism, transportation.  

Southeast Alaska Conservation Council: Umbrella group for Southeast conservation and environmental groups. Frequent backer of lawsuits against timber and other industrial development corporations.  Contact: 586-6942; info@seacc.org; www.seacc.org.  Information staffer: Emily Ferry.

Ship/boat names: No FV or MV before names. Say fishing boat or ferry if needed.

Snettisham: The name of an inlet and a power plant southeast of Juneau . Built by the feds, owned by the state, run by AEL&P of Juneau . Provides about 80 percent of Juneau ’s power.  

Southeast Alaska Guidance Association: Known as SAGA, this program provides outdoors education, team-building and other training and employment for youths, mostly teen-agers and young adults. Southeast Alaska Regional Dive Fisheries Association: Non-profit, economic development organization representing shellfish, sea cucumber, and other commercial fisheries divers.  It also includes processors and community leaders.

Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium: Known as SEARHC, pronounced “search,” a non-profit tribal health consortium of 18 Native communities. Established in 1975 under the provisions of the Indian Self-Determination Act. Took over IHS Juneau clinic in 1982 and Sitka ’s  Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in 1986. Southeast Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search: Known as SEADOGS (See-Dogs), a Juneau-based search-and-rescue group using dogs. Contact: Bruce Bowler, 789-2582  

Stephens Passage: Not Steven’s or Stephen’s. Body of water on the back side of Douglas Island that runs southeast to Frederick Sound.

Stikine River : Major Southeast watershed flowing from British Columbia into the Inside Passage near Wrangell. A major source of salmon, as well as a transportation corridor and tourist attraction.

Taku: (Tah-kuu) Name of inlet, river and multiple businesses in and south of Juneau . Means “geese land” in Tlingit. Traditional pronunciation is Tao-kuu.

Tenakee Springs: Small town of about 100 on Chichagof Island ’s Tenakee Inlet. Known for its hot springs . Tenakee is 45 miles southwest of Juneau and 50 miles northeast of Sitka .

Economy: Fishing, retail, retirees.

Thorne Bay : Second-class city, population 580, on eastern Prince of Wales Island incorporated in 1982  School: Part of the Southeast Island School District , 828-8254  Contact: 828-3380  Mayor: Julie Isom (eye-some), 828-8254 (work) or 828-3380 (city hall)  Economy: Was once the world’s largest logging camp. Southeast island school district is based here. Some small-scale mills are still operating.

Think and feel: We rarely report on how people are feeling. So when reporting on someone’s opinion, “think” or “believe” should be used. “Feel” should be reserved only for emotions.

Time and day: The universally accepted style is time-day-place: “The hearing begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Hickel Room at Centennial Hall.”

Tlingit-Haida Central Council: The generally accepted name for the regional tribal organization officially titled the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. Use shorter version unless there’s a good reason to use the longer version. Tongass National Forest : The nation’s largest national forest includes the majority of the land in Southeast. See U.S. Forest Service for details.

Treadwell: A former town and mine just south of Douglas. Only ruins remain.
